CAMPO DE LA RIBERA - Former Detention, Torture and Extermination Center
Located southeast of Cordoba City, in section 5 of the city, “Campo de la Ribera” was created in 1945 as Cordoba’s Military Jail. In December 1975 and mid-1978, it became a Detention, Torture and Extermination Clandestine Center (CCDTyE, for its acronym in Spanish), one of the most relevant ones in the province.
In 1989, the Province of Cordoba acquired these buildings to use them as educational centers, and Canónigo Pinero Elementary is created where the Officers’ Casino was. In 1991, the Technical Specialized School of Construction and Handicraft Techniques is opened, in two of the classrooms donated by the school, and in 2009, this school is moved to a new building nearby.
In 2010, the Memorial Landmark opens as Campo de la Ribera, in Memory, Promotion and Defense of Human Rights, thanks to the work and the organization of institutions, Human Rights organizations, neighbors, neighborhood organizations joined in La Quinta Social Media and the public policies of the Provincial State, oversaw through the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights. Canonigo Pinero Elementary and Kindergarten are moved to their new buildings.
